Looking for mature content that is truthful, contextual and well-executed in cinema
Let's face it, when it comes to mature content, people tend to automatically dismiss it as immoral. It is unfortunate that it is dismissed as immoral because people tend to forget that not all mature content is like that. In fact, some mature content can actually be helpful to us cinephiles as long as there is truth, context and great storytelling in the process. Plus, we should also be aware of the fact that there is mature content that is glorified and exploitative with no truth and context whatsoever. We as cinephiles should stick with truthful mature content and stay away from exploitative mature content for the sake of being nuanced.
The first thing that we as cinephiles should look for in mature content is truth. For instance, if a movie truthfully critiques the dangers of war without glorification, then the movie will succeed for the better. However, if the same subject of war is glorified to where there is no truth only to turn the film into a dishonest war is good story, then the movie will suffer for the worse. The point that I am making is that a mature movie that is truthful is different than the one that is glorified and dishonest. We as cinephiles should continue to know that not every mature movie is immoral. The more that we understand that reality, the more that we learn to be enamored with truth within the depression in cinema. There is another thing that we should look for in mature cinema and that is context.
Another thing that should be sought after in mature content is context. Context in mature content is much needed because it allows us to understand the motivation behind tough themes with real nuance. For example, if a filmmaker uses context in order to make us understand the tough and depressing themes, then it will stay with us forever due to the nuance and care. On the flip side, if there is no context behind tough themes, then unfortunately the depression will be there for nothing. The fact of the matter is that mature content works well with context while mature content without it will bore us. As cinephiles, we need to continue to champion context in our movies as a way to better appreciate the content no matter how depressing it is. We are adults not kids and we should take depressing content seriously as long as there is context within the grime. Great storytelling and execution are the next thing to look for in mature cinema.
The third thing to look for in mature content is great storytelling and execution. Great storytelling and execution are what makes us get involved in mature content. I say that because in order to better understand and accept the content, there must be a story behind it that makes us connect with it. Whenever a story uses mature themes, it must execute them well in a way that is grounded and constructed well so that audiences can get involved in the story. If a story mishandles mature themes in a poorly executed way, then the story will lose the interest and investment of its audience. One thing to understand is that in cinema, tone, character and endings alone do not make and break a movie, it is what the movie does with them that makes and breaks it. If there is a well-executed story to go along with the depression, the movie will last forever. On the other hand, if there is no well-executed story to go along with mature content, the movie will not stand the test of time. Look for great execution and storytelling in mature content considering that it helps us cinephiles understand cinema and life better.
As for me, finding mature content in cinema that is truthful, contextual and well-executed is not easy but is still worth it. I say that because it is so easy to criticize and stay away from mature content due to the tough nature of it. However, as a cinephile, I always look for nuance in mature content since I want to make sure that I stay away from exploitation and stick with truth. Do not get it twisted, I am not saying that comfort movies are bad nor am I disrespecting the opinions of those who only like feelgood stuff. I too like comfort and feelgood movies but that is not all there is to cinema considering that cinema has so many layers to it. What I do is explore mature content that is truthful while still appreciating comfort and inspirational stuff, too. It is called being well-rounded to where I constantly expand and enrich my pallet as a way to grow as a cinephile without repetition. Mature content is not for everybody considering that there are some people who want to only feelgood. I do not necessarily agree with that point, but I understand it since there are moviegoers who do not like mature content. They want to only feel happy when watching movies as a way to pass the time and they even stay away from truthful mature content without nuance. As cinephiles, we must continue to be well-rounded so that our pallets will grow as we always cover truthful mature content along with comfort stuff. God bless.
